Diamondbacks place Ketel Marte on restricted list after he doesn't show up at Fenway Park for game vs. Red Sox

The Diamondbacks placed outfielder Ketel Marte on the restricted list after he failed to show up for a game against the Boston Red Sox in Boston. According to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert, Marte did not make it to Fenway Park for the contest between the Diamondbacks and the Red Sox on Monday. The team had hoped he would arrive closer to game time, but his absence was unexpected.

While the specifics of his absence are still unknown, it is unclear when he will return. The Diamondbacks also recalled infielder Jose Fernandez from their Triple-A affiliate in Reno on Monday. This marks the second consecutive season in which Marte has missed unexpected time with the Diamondbacks. Last summer, he flew back to the Dominican Republic after the All-Star break and missed three games, citing frustration and a burglary at his home.

Despite earlier reports that Marte was taking days off and frustrating parts of the organization, manager Torey Lovullo defended him in June, stating that Marte has been an invaluable player for the Diamondbacks for a long time. Marte currently has a .249 batting average with 21 home runs and 67 RBI in his 10th season with the Diamondbacks, and the team was 66-59 at the time of Marte's absence, placing them in third place in the NL West.
