Bekas MP Hulu Selangor gagal rayuan saman fitnah hantaran FB mengenai sekolah

On June 21, 2021, former Hulu Selangor MP June Leow filed a fitrasan (defamation) lawsuit against Ravi, alleging that the latter's Facebook post on July 17, 2020, unfairly criticized him and PKR Hulu Selangor for failing to take action regarding the construction of the SRKT Ascort in Hulu Bernam.

The case was brought before the Federal Court's Judiciary Division on June 22, 2021, by Leow's legal team, comprising Shamsher Singh Thind, Gunamalar Joorindanjn, and Ching Jee Joe. The respondent's legal team, representing Ravi, was led by T Anandan, A Arvinada Moorthy, and Nur Fatin Farzana Redzuan.

During the hearing, judge Azizul Azmi Adnan, presiding over the three-judge bench of Mahkamah Rayuan, determined that the statement at issue did not constitute defamation, as it did not refer to Leow personally. Instead, it accused Leow of inaction, which could only be interpreted as negligence.

However, the court ruled that Leow failed to clarify in his press conference whether the degree of defamation applied to his case, leading to the judges' conclusion that he had not made a clear statement on the matter. Consequently, the court dismissed Leow's appeal against the High Court's decision to deny his fitnasan. The court also ordered Leow to pay Ravi a sum of RM50,000 in costs.
