Anwar vows Tabung Haji act overhaul

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced plans to overhaul key legislation in Malaysia, aimed at enhancing institutional governance and protecting student rights. The proposed changes include amending the Tabung Haji Act 1995 and completely repealing the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU). Anwar, who serves as both Prime Minister and Finance Minister, stated that these reforms are part of a broader commitment to strengthen institutional governance and address weaknesses across various sectors.

The Tabung Haji Act amendments will be introduced to protect the trust placed in the institution by the Muslim community, while the complete repeal of the AUKU will ensure that student voices are not constrained by outdated legislation. Anwar emphasized that these measures are part of the MADANI Government's ongoing efforts to address governance issues and ensure equitable development nationwide, regardless of political affiliations or geographical location.

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to economic growth that translates into tangible improvements for all Malaysians, stressing that the government's responsibility extends to every corner of the country, not just its supporters or specific regions. The announcement comes amid the conclusion of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) National Congress 2026, where Anwar, as PKR president, reiterated the party's commitment to principles, idealism, and pursuing what it believes to be right.

PKR must not compromise its ideals to retain political power, Anwar asserted, emphasizing the importance of a clean leadership lineup, firm leadership, and organized work execution.
