Agotime Kente Festival 2026: Celebrating heritage, culture and the future of kente [Photos]

The Agotime Kente Festival 2026 in the Volta Region celebrated the community's rich cultural heritage under the theme, “Agotime Kente – Honouring Our Heritage, Safeguarding Our Future.” The event showcased the tradition of kente weaving, promoting unity, cultural identity and preserving the craft for future generations.

On Friday, the festivities commenced with the Asialetorme, a colourful water-carrying procession led by women carrying pots of water on their heads through the town. This procession symbolised women's vital role in the community, reflecting dignity, unity and respect for tradition, setting the stage for the main celebrations with music, color and vibrant cultural displays.

The climax of the festival occurred on Saturday, featuring a grand durbar at Kpetoe, which united chiefs, queen mothers, traditional authorities, community members and guests. The event boasted traditional drumming and dancing, speeches, cultural performances and impressive displays of Agotime kente, with adorned chiefs and queen mothers.

A key focus was the proposed Kente Village and Centre of Excellence, aimed at supporting local weavers, preserving traditional designs, generating employment, and positioning Agotime as a major cultural tourism destination. The main guest of honour was Alex Segbefia, Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President.
