Africa’s Youth Are Looking For Jobs: The Food System May Hold The Answer

Every year on August 12, the world recognizes the energy, creativity and potential of young people on International Youth Day. The theme for 2026 is “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” which is particularly relevant to Africa. With over 60% of its population under 25, Africa faces the challenge of creating more than 10 million decent jobs annually by 2035 to accommodate its rapidly growing young workforce.

While traditional notions of agriculture may conjure images of subsistence farming, the modern food system encompasses a much broader range of opportunities. From seeds, soil and production to logistics, technology, retail and export, the food system offers diverse pathways for young people to enter the economy. This realization is the essence behind International Youth Day’s focus on youth innovation.

Young entrepreneurs across Africa are already developing businesses that tackle food insecurity, climate change, market inefficiencies and consumer demand. The Africa Food Systems Forum 2026, taking place in Kigali, Rwanda from September 1–4, presents an opportunity for these young innovators to connect with investors, policymakers, scientists and other stakeholders.

The forum, organized by AGRA, will emphasize youth and digital innovation, alongside investment, food security, climate resilience, trade and markets. For a young African entrepreneur, attending such a gathering can provide invaluable networking opportunities, mentorship, and access to resources that can turn an idea into a viable business.
