49ers rookie DT Gracen Halton impresses in his first preseason game

Santa Clara, Calif. (AP) — During Gracen Halton's first exhibition game, a two-play sequence demonstrated why the rookie defensive tackle, drafted fourth round by the San Francisco 49ers, has caught the team's attention. Halton successfully split two Tennessee offensive linemen on a stunt, sacking Cam Ward, before being penalized by the secondary.

On the subsequent play, he overpowered Tyjae Spears, stuffing him for a 1-yard loss. Trent Williams, the 49ers' left tackle, remarked that "the world kind of saw what he has to offer," praising Halton's explosive short-area quickness and powerful performance. Halton, who was drafted 107th overall from Oklahoma, has consistently excelled in drills and team sessions against the 49ers' veterans, maintaining that he needs improvements but is grateful for the opportunity.

Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris noted that Halton has transformed from a quiet student in meetings into a player whose enthusiasm boosts the team's morale, particularly for an older veteran like Williams. With the 49ers aiming to enhance their pass rush, Halton's potential playmaking could significantly contribute to the team's performance.

The 49ers also acquired DL Victor Dimukeje and OL Nick Zakelj on one-year deals and released RB Khalil Herbert and OL Kion Smith to create roster space.
