‘Weak leadership’: Three lawyers’ collectives demand resignation of Bar Council Chairman

Three lawyers' collectives, comprising over 700 lawyers nationwide, have called for the resignation of Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra following a controversy surrounding the National Law University and Judicial Academy (NALSAR) university. Mishra's leadership has come under scrutiny after he initially barred 2026 graduates from enrolling with state bar councils, only to later withdraw the order.

The groups, which include the All India Lawyers Association for Justice, National Alliance for Justice Accountability and Rights, and Queer Lawyers Association, have endorsed a letter demanding Mishra's resignation. A collective press statement expressed dismay at Mishra's perceived "arbitrariness" and lack of upholding the legal profession's interests and integrity.

The lawyers argue that the decline in the capacity for protest and courage is concerning, given Mishra's weak leadership. They have written to Mishra, urging him to resign, and are prepared to write to other Bar Council members to pass a no-confidence motion if necessary. The collective emphasizes the importance of maintaining the independence, integrity, and autonomy of the legal profession for a robust democracy.
