‘We need to up the ante’: Rennie on All Blacks’ readiness for Springboks

Coach Dave Rennie recognizes that the All Blacks have achieved many objectives and performed well against the Bulls in altitude. However, he acknowledges that the Springboks present a higher level of quality compared to their previous opponents. The New Zealanders had previously defeated the Stormers, Sharks, and Bulls in warm-up games over eight days before their first Test against South Africa at Ellis Park this Saturday.

Following the Bulls' match, their third captain, Codie Taylor, stated that the team had improved during the three games and was well-prepared for the Springboks. Codie also noted that the group was "set up nicely" for the upcoming match.

Rennie commented on the Pretoria union, highlighting the presence of Springboks such as Embrose Papier, Elrigh Louw, and Johan Grobbelaar. He mentioned that despite scoring 50 points against the Bulls, the All Blacks failed to capitalize on their numerous opportunities, leaving around 11 line breaks unutilized. Rennie emphasized that their discipline was significantly better in this match, and they created an impressive 11 line breaks compared to one by the Bulls.

When questioned about the All Blacks' readiness for the Springboks, Rennie asserted that the team had the chance to play against the Bulls, forcing defenders to make crucial decisions. He acknowledged that the Springboks would come with a much more intense and challenging defense, potentially three, four, or even five times higher in quality. Despite his team's reasonably good performance on the tour, Rennie emphasized the necessity for the All Blacks to elevate their efforts.
