Two injured as Mumbai-bound Air India passenger ‘accidentally’ fires gun at Varanasi airport

Two individuals were injured when a gun accidentally discharged at Varanasi's airport on Sunday morning, according to officials. The incident occurred around 9:30 am during a security check at the Lal Bahadur Shashtri International Airport. A passenger from Azamgarh and his wife, who were set to fly to Mumbai on Air India's IX-1810 flight, were the ones affected.

The gun in question was being inspected by AAICLAS screeners when it discharged, causing injuries to both screeners. The airport director informed ANI that the event took place on 16.08.2026 at approximately 0930 hours. Both injured screeners were subsequently taken to the New Laxmi Trauma Centre for medical attention. The local police have been notified and an investigation into the matter is currently underway.
