Twelve killed as Polish bus veers off Hungarian motorway

Twelve individuals lost their lives and a number of others sustained injuries when a bus carrying Polish tourists lost control on a Hungarian motorway and collided with a ditch. The incident occurred around 01:00 local time on Sunday (23:00 GMT on Saturday) when the bus departed from the M3 motorway, which links Budapest, Hungary's capital, with Nyíregyháza in the northeastern region. Authorities suspect the driver dozed off while operating the vehicle. He has been apprehended by the authorities.

As of now, 35 out of the 57 passengers, along with the two drivers on board, have been rescued by firefighters. The Hungarian state media has reported this information. Emergency services have been working to lift the rear axle of the 24-tonne bus in order to extricate the individuals trapped beneath it. Cranes have since arrived to lift the entire vehicle, according to the news agency MTI.

The Hungarian ambulance service has stated that one person has been treated with life-threatening injuries, nine individuals have serious injuries, and an additional 37 people have minor injuries. Hungary's Prime Minister Péter Magyar has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and extended his best wishes to those injured for a swift recovery.
