Trump shares throwback picture with Kim Jong Un, says they 'get along great despite unfriendly look'

US President Donald Trump has shared a throwback photograph with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, asserting they share a great relationship despite past tensions. Despite the unfriendly appearance in the image, Trump and Kim have been known to smile in numerous other pictures together, according to the President. The photo shows the two during their historic 2018 summit in Singapore, their first meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

Trump and Kim held three meetings during Trump's first term, but their diplomacy has since stalled. A second summit in Hanoi in 2019 concluded without an agreement due to disagreements over North Korea's nuclear program and sanctions relief. Despite this, Trump has expressed openness to renewing direct engagement with Kim. North Korea has criticized upcoming US-South Korea military exercises, calling them provocative.

Despite Trump's outreach, Kim has refused to give up his nuclear arsenal, condemning the US and its allies following the NATO summit and conducting a suspected ballistic missile launch. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung suggested a phased approach to North Korea's nuclear program in June 2026, but Pyongyang remains unresponsive to such proposals.
