Strong BN-PN pact needs early deal on seats, PM candidate

A BN-PN alliance stands to gain from early resolution of seat distribution and selection of the prime ministerial candidate, according to an analyst, as the two coalitions seek to strengthen their partnership ahead of the 16th general election. Tawfik Yaakub of Universiti Malaya emphasized that such issues are crucial in a complex election involving 222 parliamentary seats and national and state interests.

Referring to Wawasan president Hamzah Zainudin's statement, Tawfik suggested that a common plan and agenda must be established from the outset for the alliance to be stronger and more stable. The last BN-PN government formed in 2020-2022 lacked advance planning, making it hard for the parties to build trust. Hamzah stressed that the seat allocation formula should be accepted by both sides, extending beyond Melaka state elections.

BN and PN previously collaborated to govern Malaysia from March 2020 to November 2022, and their partnership returned in the Negeri Sembilan state poll, where they secured 25 of 36 seats and formed the state government. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara argued that seat negotiations and political understanding must be finalized before the 16th general election to avoid conflicts being addressed only after results.

He warned that ad hoc government formation post-election could lead to forced cooperation and dissatisfaction among parties involved.
