Spidey swings high for third weekend in N. American box office

Spider-Man: Brand New Day continued to dominate the North American box office, raking in an additional US$70 million in ticket sales during its third consecutive weekend at the theaters. The superhero film, starring Tom Holland and his real-life wife Zendaya, has amassed more than US$2 billion globally since its July 31 release.

It dethroned Disney's 2019 hit Avengers: Endgame as the highest-grossing Marvel blockbuster in domestic box offices, according to industry watchers. The latest Marvel blockbuster saw Peter Parker grappling with his evolving powers and personal life after erasing his identity. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's epic The Odyssey earned US$23.2 million domestically in its fifth weekend on screen, while Warner Bros' sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street brought in US$21 million.

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie and Katseye: Wild Hearts rounded out the top five, earning US$20.5 million and US$3.6 million respectively in their opening weekends. Despite a potential slowdown in the second half of August as children return to school, Hollywood's box office remains robust, according to industry analyst David A. Gross.
