Research achieves its highest purpose when it serves society: Vice-President

Vice-President Jagdish Mukhi addressed the 22nd convocation of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) in Kattankulathur, emphasizing the importance of research serving society. He recalled how India's COVID vaccine was sent to over 100 countries free of charge, highlighting the greatness of India. Mukhi also praised the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, who had directed the vaccine distribution.

He recounted a recent meeting with the Speaker of Kenyan Parliament, who expressed gratitude for India's COVID vaccine, further underscoring the global impact of India's scientific endeavours. Mukhi lauded SRMIST for fostering an academic environment that encourages interdisciplinary learning, creativity, entrepreneurship, and critical thinking.

He commended the institute's commitment to translating research into practical solutions that enhance lives, bolster industry, and contribute to sustainable development. Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar praised the rich heritage of science and technology in India, urging the nation to take pride in its ancient scientific contributions while embracing modern advancements.

The event also featured speeches from SRMIST Chancellor T.R. Paarivendhar, Pro-Chancellor (Administration) Ravi Pachamuthu, Pro-Chancellor (Academics) P. Sathyanarayanan, and Vice-Chancellor C. Muthamizhchelvan, among other dignitaries. The ceremony saw the conferral of the honorary doctorate degree of science upon R. Velusamy, President of Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra Limited.

Across all campuses, 11,684 graduates were eligible for degrees this year under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. The Vice-President unveiled a 32-foot statue of the institute's Founder Chancellor, Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, at the Vendhar Museum.
