Portland warns of sirens, four blasts and possible lead, asbestos dust near Centennial Mills

The city of Portland is warning residents about sirens, loud blasts, and possible dust containing lead and asbestos dust near the Centennial Mills site. With demolition set to start Monday, Aug. 17, controlled explosions will bring down the water tower building. The contractor will clear a 300-foot area around the property before the blast.

Portlanders near the warehouse will receive text alerts one hour before the explosions begin. Sirens will sound three minutes before the blast and again one minute before, followed by a verbal countdown and four simultaneous blasts. After the water tower is removed, the contractor will dismantle the walls to minimize debris. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid the area during and after the blasts, using an N95 mask if necessary.
