Monsoon rains submerge villages, fields in Myanmar

Myanmar is grappling with devastating monsoon flooding that has inundated villages and rice fields in central regions, forcing mass evacuations and leaving people without possessions. Cho Myint, a 53-year-old resident of Wetlet township, expressed the emotional toll, stating, "The suffering we are facing, I can't even put into words how painful it is."

The United Nations reported that since July, severe flooding in Sagaing, Rakhine, Irrawaddy, and Kachin states has impacted an estimated 390,000 people, with 230,000 in Sagaing alone. Villagers from displaced war refugee communities recounted their struggles, as their temporary shelters were submerged by floodwaters, unable to save their belongings.

The flooding has also devastated livelihoods, particularly rice crops, rendering the land unsuitable for replanting. Myanmar's Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement reported that as of August 11, over 11,400 individuals from 3,220 households were relocated to flood relief centers in Sagaing. With ongoing rains and rivers at or above danger levels, humanitarian organizations estimate the flooding's impact will persist for days and weeks ahead.
