Police stake out illegal racers with a roadside BBQ

In Samut Prakan, police employed an unconventional method to catch illegal motorcycle racers: setting up a roadside barbecue. The operation, named "Camping: Sending Kids Back into Their Parents' Arms," aimed to target youths who gathered to modify and race motorcycles late at night. Reports from residents and motorists prompted the police to take action, as illegal racing had become a regular nuisance and raised safety concerns.

Eight undercover officers, both plainclothes and uniformed, participated in the sting operation. Instead of using traditional patrol cars, the officers posed as local residents. They set up folding tables, cooking equipment, and a moo krata (BBQ) feast, blending in with the usual weekend crowd. Their goal was to observe the youths gathering in the area without drawing attention.

When the officers spotted a group preparing to race, they alerted nearby police units, which quickly surrounded and detained the suspects. The operation extended to Leab Klong Song Nam Suvarnabhumi Road, another location plagued by illegal motorcycle racing. As a result of the crackdown, four motorcycles were seized and eight youths were detained, to be handed over to investigators for further legal action.

Bang Phli police emphasized that the BBQ gathering was merely a tactic to monitor suspects without causing alarm. The site was cleaned and all equipment removed after the operation. The police operation followed a similar undercover crackdown a week earlier, where a team disguised as street racers infiltrated a group of young riders to make arrests.
