NPR officer fatally shoots man in drama in Meru

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, a National Police Reservist (NPR) officer fatally shot 47-year-old Julius Kariunga in Mutuati, Meru County. The incident, currently under investigation, involved the officer allegedly using a G3 rifle to shoot Kariunga, who sustained serious injuries and later died. Following the shooting, the officer transported the rifle to Ndoleli Police Station, where he reportedly discarded it.

Upon arriving, police confirmed Kariunga's death. The G3 rifle, identified by serial number 070628, was subsequently seized by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) as evidence. Kariunga's body was transported to Nyambene General Hospital mortuary for preservation ahead of a postmortem examination. Meanwhile, in a separate case, an unidentified woman, believed to be around 60 years old, was found dead in the Tana River near Segerea Market in Tharaka North, Tharaka Nithi County. Discovered by local residents on Saturday, the woman was identified as naked with a deep cut on her forehead, suggesting the possibility of severe injury prior to her death.
