Moscow says 600 drones targeted region overnight

Overnight, a swarm of drones numbering 600 targeted the Moscow region, causing injuries to three individuals as reported by the city's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin. The assault began around Saturday evening and continued until 6:30 a.m. local time on Sunday. According to Sobyanin, out of the 600 drones, 201 were successfully shot down over the region. The wounded individuals were treated at the site of the incident, located along the MKAD ring road within Moscow.

The escalation in drone attacks by Ukraine has been ongoing in recent weeks, with the country targeting military installations, industrial facilities, and warehouses located far from the frontline. Ukrainian news outlet Kyiv Independent revealed that Ukrainian forces struck a warehouse belonging to the online retail conglomerate Wildberries, as well as industrial sites in multiple cities across the Moscow region.

Although there is currently no independent verification of the extent of the drone attack on Moscow, NATO countries situated along Ukraine's borders have faced their own drone intrusions. Romania's Defense Ministry announced that a Spanish F-18 jet intercepted and downed a drone on Sunday at 5:01 a.m. local time (0201 UTC) after it entered Romanian airspace from Moldova, near the Ukrainian border.

The debris from the downed drone landed in an uninhabited area of Galati county, close to the Ukrainian border. The source did not disclose the drone's origin or the entity responsible for its launch. Romania has reported drone debris on its territory since 2023 following Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports along the Danube. Additionally, on Friday, an Italian Eurofighter aircraft, operating under NATO command, also shot down a foreign drone that entered Latvian airspace.
