Land Rover Discovery Gemini classy farewell for embattled model

The Land Rover Discovery Gemini model, a stylish farewell to an embattled SUV, has wrapped up its production run. As the Discovery's future remains uncertain, the Gemini may mark the end of the line for this iconic vehicle. The Citizen Motoring recently experienced a week behind the wheel of a Discovery Gemini, introduced last year alongside the Tempest model.

Based on the S model range entry-level, the Gemini adds aesthetic enhancements and extra specifications to the cabin. Despite no longer bearing the Land Rover name, the Discovery remains a formidable presence. The Gemini badge pays homage to the 2.5-litre diesel engine that powered the original Discovery in 1989. With its fifth-generation iteration, the Discovery may soon be replaced by an electric SUV, with the smaller Discovery Sport's production set to end at year's end.

The Gemini model boasts a gloss black Narvik Black roof, Gemini graphics on the B-pillars, and an Atlas Grey finish around the front grille. It comes standard with 21-inch diamond turned silver alloy wheels, a significant contrast to the optional 22-inch gloss dark grey alloys fitted to our test model, which cost R2 038 800. Inside, the Gemini features tri-zone climate control and a cooled centre console compartment, with optional upgrades like a four-zone system, solar attenuating windscreen, and powered inner tailgate.

The Pivi Pro 11.4-inch infotainment system is a highlight, paired with the excellent Meridian Surround sound system. With a 3.0-litre Ingenium straight-six turbodiesel engine, the Discovery Gemini delivers 257kW of power and 700Nm of torque, all-wheel-drive, and a smooth ride. Its spacious interior offers 258 litres of boot space, expanding to 1 231 litres with the third row folded flat.

At R2 038 800, the Gemini provides a classy alternative to those seeking a more elegant option than the butch Defender or the overly flashy Range Rover Sport.
