Jokbo epiphany

Recently, while collaborating with two organizations that analyze and index Chinese and Korean jokbo, I experienced a profound realization - two epiphanies, to be precise. The first epiphany was that Chinese jiapu and Korean jokbo are fundamentally distinct. Despite their similar appearances and generational structures, their purposes and contents differ greatly.

It was a common assumption among those working on these projects that they were quite similar due to their structural similarities and the use of Chinese characters. However, upon closer examination, it became evident that their content was entirely separate.

The second revelation came to light when I delved deeper into how women were portrayed in each document. In Chinese jiapu, women are typically identified solely by their surname, with limited additional details. Documents often include a hometown and, in some cases, a father's name. However, these records do not provide sufficient information to uncover more about the women involved. It is crucial to note that Chinese jiapu does not contain the concept of a bongwan, which is essential in Korean jokbo.

In contrast, Korean jokbo places significant emphasis on the bongwan. This ancestral home of the clan founder is vital for uncovering records related to the wife. The presence of a bongwan in Korean jokbo documents serves as the key to retrieving information about the wife, making it a critical aspect of the overall content.
