Japan ruling party executive Kobayashi visits war-linked Yasukuni shrine

Takayuki Kobayashi, a high-ranking official from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, paid a visit to the Yasukuni shrine on Sunday, following other prominent party members - but excluding Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi - who had paid their respects on the 81st anniversary of the end of World War II. Kobayashi, who was not part of the delegation that made the pilgrimage on Saturday, had urgent matters to attend to due to heavy rain affecting his constituency in Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo.

His visit came amidst sharp reactions from China and South Korea, who strongly condemned the actions of Takaichi's Cabinet members, including Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, and Takaichi herself for their offerings at the Shinto shrine. The shrine is infamous for honoring war criminals alongside the war dead, which has led to tensions with Japan's neighboring countries who suffered under Japan's imperialist aggression during World War II.

Kobayashi expressed his visit as a family member, renewing his commitment to safeguarding the lives of the Japanese people at all times. As an individual known for his conservative stance, Kobayashi once served as the economic security minister before assuming his current position as LDP executive. He lost the ruling party's presidential election to Takaichi in the previous year.

In contrast to Kobayashi, Takaichi refrained from visiting the shrine on Saturday, the first war-related anniversary since she became premier. However, upon her arrival at the Nippon Budokan hall for a memorial ceremony a mere few hundred meters away from Yasukuni, she performed a double bow, clapped twice, and then bowed once towards the shrine as a gesture of Shinto-style worship.

On the anniversary day, a total of four Cabinet ministers, along with three senior LDP executives - Secretary General Shunichi Suzuki, General Council Chair Haruko Arimura, and election strategy chief Yasutoshi Nishimura - paid their respects at the shrine.
