INEC closes Osun election situation room, prepares for 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally closed its Situation Room following the conclusion of the Osun State governorship election on August 15. The commission announced this in a statement on its official X handle. INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, SAN, praised his staff for their dedication and professionalism throughout the electoral process.

He acknowledged the long hours worked by staff, many of whom sacrificed time with their families and worked under challenging conditions to ensure a smooth election. Amupitan attributed the peaceful atmosphere during the election to God's grace and protection. He described the Osun election as a milestone, not a destination, emphasizing that lessons and experience gained must inform the commission's preparations for the 2027 general election.

Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, won the election with 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who secured 444,815 votes. Adeleke won 19 of the state's 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11.
