Hundreds flee as Belgium battles wildfire at German border

A massive wildfire erupted in Belgium, burning approximately 2,700 hectares (6,700 acres) in the High Fens nature reserve near the German border. This onerous blaze forced the evacuation of around 600 residents from parts of Waimes, Sourbrodt, and Buetgenbach due to shifting winds and thick smoke. Belgian authorities, along with the European Union, deployed three helicopters and two water bombers to help control the fire, which has rapidly spread across peatlands and pine forests.

The intensity and rapid expansion of the fire have shocked Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin, who reported that efforts are being made to safeguard homes. The fire's proximity to the German border led to precautionary evacuations in the German town of Monschau, though it was later reported that the blaze was not advancing toward the border.

Heavy rain, lower winds, and high humidity have aided firefighting efforts. The climate crisis has been linked to the increasing likelihood of extreme heat and dry conditions, which contribute to the rapid spread and persistence of wildfires. European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib emphasized that the wildfire season is starting earlier and reaching higher latitudes than ever before.
