The number of young people who were not in education, employment, or training (NEET) decreased by 70,000, but those who were preparing for work or study increased significantly. According to Statistics Korea on the 15th, the number of young people aged 15-29 who were 'not in education, employment, or training' (NEET) was 410,000 as of May this year, down 70,000 from the same month last year. The number of young people who were 'not in education, employment, or training' has been on the decline for three consecutive months. However, despite the decrease in the number of young people who were 'not in education, employment, or training', the number of young people who were 'preparing for work or study' increased significantly. As of May this year, 2.52 million young people were preparing for work or study, up 230,000 from the same month last year. This is an increase of 130,000 from the previous month, and the largest increase since 2015 when the relevant statistics were first compiled. The number of young people who were 'preparing for work or study' accounted for 34.4% of all young people, up 3.3 percentage points from the same month last year. The number of young people who were 'preparing for work or study' increased across all regions, with the largest increase in Seoul, where the number rose by 90,000 to 930,000. The number of young people who were 'preparing for work or study' in urban areas increased by 150,000 to 1.83 million, and in rural areas, it increased by 80,000 to 690,000. The Statistics Korea said, "The number of young people who were 'preparing for work or study' increased significantly, driven by an increase in those preparing for public service exams and employment."
