Garda Commissioner condemns 'reckless' motorway driving

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly has harshly criticized the dangerous driving behavior of motorists who travel on the wrong side of motorways. This warning follows several fatalities resulting from head-on collisions on the M9 motorway in Co Kildare and the M50 in Dublin. Kelly suggested that some drivers engage in this reckless behavior to gain social media attention.

He emphasized the appalling nature of such actions, which are not only reckless but also potentially life-threatening for innocent people and the drivers themselves. Kelly expressed his condolences to the injured in the morning's M9 collision and to the Garda Síochána members and emergency services who responded to the incident.

He noted that he could not disclose details of the recent collision as the case has been handed over to Fiosrú, the Police Ombudsman. Kelly assured that An Garda Síochána would fully cooperate with the ongoing inquiry and hoped for a swift resolution.
