Crude oil pipeline bursts in Karachi’s DHA Phase VI, repair work underway

A crude oil pipeline owned by National Refinery Limited (NRL) ruptured in Karachi’s DHA Phase VI on Saturday evening, prompting a public safety and environmental advisory from the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa). The leak occurred on Khayaban-e-Sehar, Street 13, around 10:30pm, according to a Sepa statement released by the provincial government’s Information Department.

Sepa Director General Ashiq Langah reported that NRL’s response team arrived at the scene around midnight to initiate containment and clean-up procedures. Over 20 drums have been utilized to recover the leaked oil thus far. Excavation efforts have commenced to pinpoint the precise location of the leak and halt it entirely. Environment Secretary Faisal Uqaili directed authorities to ensure the prompt removal and safe disposal of contaminated soil, sand, and sludge, adhering to environmental regulations.

Fresh sand will be laid at the site once remediation is complete. Sepa maintains ongoing monitoring of the situation and has directed NRL management to fully contain the leak, dispose of contaminated materials properly, and assess the environmental impact. Uqaili emphasized that the protection of citizens and prevention of further environmental pollution are the government’s top priorities, promising immediate remedial measures and proper disposal of contaminated material in line with environmental laws.

All relevant agencies are cooperating closely, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Sepa has advised residents to avoid the affected area, refrain from smoking or using open flames near the spilled oil, and not attempt to clean it up themselves. Report any continued leakage or additional spread of oil to the relevant authorities immediately.
