Englishman Whaley wins US Amateur title

Jack Whaley achieved a remarkable feat as he became only the second Englishman to win the US Amateur Championship since 1911. The 22-year-old from Doncaster defeated American Jay Leng Jr. 4 & 3 at Merion, securing his place in the fields for the Masters, US Open, and The Open at St Andrews in 2027. Despite being considered an underdog against the 23rd-ranked amateur golfer in the world, Whaley's on-course performance surpassed expectations.

In the 36-hole contest, Whaley slipped two strokes behind after the first 18 holes, but he fought back resolutely. He made two consecutive birdies on the second and third holes of his second round, followed by four victories in a row. The rain in Pennsylvania did not dampen Whaley's spirits, as he took two of the next six holes and eventually, with a crucial left-to-right putt for birdie at 15, managed to secure his victory.

This triumph marked the first time an English amateur had won the US Amateur since Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013. Harold Hilton had been the last Englishman to claim the title in 1911, with Richie Ramsay of Scotland being the only other British winner since 1898.
