DVLA to deploy video monitoring system to curb loopholes in roadworthiness certification

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to introduce a video monitoring system to ensure roadworthiness certifications are accurately issued at Private Vehicle Testing Stations (PVTS). In an interview on TV3's Hot Issues, DVLA CEO Julius Neequaye Kotey stated that the system, inspired by a model observed in Denmark, will require vehicles to be recorded during testing before a roadworthiness certificate can be granted.

Kotey explained that if a vehicle arrives at a PVTS without a video record, the system will prevent the issuance of a certificate. The proposed system is currently undergoing testing, with corrections made prior to its deployment, and is expected to be fully implemented next year, subject to necessary commitments and authorizations.

The CEO warned that the stricter system may lead to the removal of many unroadworthy vehicles from Ghana's roads and cautioned drivers that many cars would be taken off the road. The DVLA aims to strengthen the integrity of the roadworthiness certification process and enhance road safety in Ghana.
