Dominic Sessa didn't know how to cook before playing Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain, the culinary icon, left an indelible mark on the culinary and entertainment industries. Before his rise to fame, Bourdain was a novice chef known as Tony, portrayed by Dominic Sessa in a new film directed by Matt Johnson. Sessa's Tony was a petulant teenager with little culinary knowledge, set in 1975. Johnson emphasized the importance of Sessa's inexperience on screen, stating, "I didn't want him to learn because this movie is about a neophyte who really has no idea what he's doing, and that's kind of tough to fake."

In a unique twist, renowned chef Antonio Banderas, known only as Chef in the film, guided Sessa through the kitchen. Sessa, in turn, learned key skills such as oyster shucking from Chef Eli Sussman. The film, focusing on Bourdain's early life, offers a lighter perspective compared to the mental health struggles later in his life.

Sessa noted that his character had a consistent darkness, hinting at the self-worth issues that Bourdain grappled with. The film also delves into Bourdain's relationship with his high school sweetheart, hinting at the emotional connections that drove his passion for food.
