Diesel subsidy shake‑up coming soon; govt promises simpler rules, family quota transfers, easier access

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan says the government is set to introduce changes to the targeted diesel subsidy system in the coming months. The improvements will focus on simplifying the application process, relaxing eligibility criteria for sambung bayar (continuation of hire-purchase payments) vehicles, and allowing quotas to be transferred to immediate family members.

Amir Hamzah made these remarks during a press conference following a budget engagement session with industry players. He emphasized that the upcoming changes aim to better target assistance to those truly in need and reduce the cost-of-living burden at the grassroots level. Currently, about 120,000 pickup truck and jeep owners in Sabah are eligible for a diesel subsidy quota exceeding 300 liters, but only around 49,000 have registered for the subsidy.

The government is urging more eligible owners in Sabah to apply promptly, as the necessary application channels have been made available. To support those less tech-savvy, the Ministry of Finance has partnered with the Inland Revenue Board, Urban Transformation Centres, and oil companies to provide guidance at application counters and petrol stations.
