DAP votes to stay in Malaysia's ruling coalition, easing pressure on Anwar

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has voted to maintain its presence in the Cabinet, ending uncertainty over its role in the ANG (Angga) Government. At the party’s special congress, delegates voted against withdrawing from the administration in a secret ballot. Out of 2,099 votes counted, 1,857 (88%) favored staying in government, while 242 opposed it.

With 2,223 delegates attending the congress, representing 52.12% of those registered, DAP’s ministers, deputy ministers, and representatives on government-linked company boards will continue in their positions. Negeri Sembilan DAP secretary Cha Kee Chin announced the results, stating that the vote came after weeks of debate within DAP, particularly following the party’s defeat in the Negeri Sembilan state election on August 1 and calls for faster reforms.

DAP supports staying in government to push for reforms and influence policies while holding the administration accountable. The decision also provides Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government with political stability, as it relies on a coalition involving PH, BN, and parties from Sabah and Sarawak. DAP currently holds five ministerial positions and seven deputy minister roles.
