DAP calls for stronger economic and institutional reform

PUTRAJAYA: DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo has called for the Prime Minister to accelerate economic and institutional reforms, having been in office for three and a half years. During his speech at the party's National Congress, Gobind noted the ongoing requests from DAP leaders about the need for reform. The DAP delegates will vote on whether the party should continue in the Federal Government or withdraw during the congress.

Gobind emphasized the importance of compromise in a coalition government, stating that the coalition requires compromise between parties with different manifestos. He listed three priorities: economic relief for the public, political stability to attract foreign investment, and institutional reform. Gobind highlighted Malaysia's success in attracting global investors due to political stability, citing the strengthening ringgit as evidence.

Regarding institutional reform, he mentioned proposals such as separating the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor roles, implementing a two-term limit for the prime minister, and amending certain laws. The DAP party intends to push for parliamentary time to advance these reforms, using the Tabung Haji Royal Commission of Inquiry as an example.

Gobind also addressed concerns about Malaysia's ethnic diversity, particularly the Indian community's position in national development plans. The upcoming vote will determine if the DAP's ministers will remain in the Cabinet for the remainder of the term, following recent setbacks in state elections like Negri Sembilan.
