Bangladesh says PM will not visit India until Hasina extradited

Bangladesh has stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not travel to India until New Delhi extradites Sheikh Hasina, the former premier who fled during a 2024 uprising. The two nations have experienced a tense relationship since Hasina's government was toppled by anti-government protests, leading to her escape to neighboring India where she currently resides.

Hasina faces the death penalty in Bangladesh after being found guilty of crimes against humanity, and Dhaka has persistently requested her extradition. A foreign ministry official, AKM Shahidul Karim, downplayed reports of Rahman's potential trip to India next week, stating that a favorable atmosphere must be established for the visit.

Karim urged Indian authorities to accelerate their efforts to extradite Hasina and other fugitives. India has acknowledged Bangladesh's extradition request is being reviewed. Rahman assumed office in February and has since journeyed to Malaysia and China, deviating from the norm of Bangladeshi leaders visiting India upon their initial foreign trip.

Dinesh Trivedi, India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh, met with Rahman last week, sparking speculation of a possible resolution. However, the procedure has been impeded by Hasina's continued public appearances, despite her conviction for crimes against humanity. Hasina, a former pro-democracy advocate who critics allege grew more authoritarian during her 15-year rule, declared this month that she would return to Bangladesh in December regardless of imprisonment.

Karim also announced that Bangladesh would adopt a "Bangladesh First" foreign policy emphasizing sovereignty and non-interference, while simultaneously pursuing mutually advantageous ties with India and other countries.
