Asia's best university makes ChatGPT access available to all students, mandates AI course for freshmen

The National University of Singapore (NUS), currently ranked highest among Asian institutions in the 2027 QS World University Rankings, has entered a partnership with OpenAI. This collaboration came to light on August 11 through NUS's official website. The agreement grants faculty and staff access to ChatGPT Edu, a specialized version of ChatGPT tailored for higher education.

Unlike the general version, ChatGPT Edu offers broader access to OpenAI's core capabilities within a secure, university-managed environment. This version emphasizes enhanced privacy, security, and administrative controls, ensuring that data and conversations within NUS remain confidential and are not used to train OpenAI's models.

NUS plans to introduce an AI course for all first-year undergraduates starting in the 2026/27 academic year. The foundational course, titled "THE1008 Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation," will be part of the university's Transition to Higher Education (T.H.E.) Program. This module aims to equip students with practical skills in using large language models and multimodal AI tools, along with the ability to evaluate their outputs critically.

Beyond the freshman requirement, the university intends to integrate AI competencies throughout the curriculum, fostering critical thinking, judgment, and sense-making among students. Ultimately, NUS aims to prepare graduates to strategically utilize AI for analysis, problem-solving, and creative work across various disciplines.
