Alozie deactivates Instagram after W’Cup failure

Nigerian football defender Michele Alozie has deactivated her Instagram account in the wake of widespread criticism following her team's failure to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. According to PUNCH Sports Extra, the Super Falcons, captained by Madugu, faltered in the Women’s African Championship (WAFCON), exiting the tournament in the quarter-final to Cameroon.

This setback eliminated their chance of securing an automatic World Cup spot with just a play-off to play. With South Africa emerging victorious in the playoff match against the Super Falcons, putting an end to their qualification hopes, Alozie found herself one of the primary targets of the backlash. Alozie, known for her regular appearances in the squad, had previously faced criticism for her extensive social media usage, including sharing content with her teammates.

However, the latest criticism was specifically linked to the team's historic failure in qualifying for the World Cup. Her Instagram profile has remained dormant since the criticism escalated. The growing dissatisfaction has also reignited calls for head coach Madugu's dismissal and a major overhaul of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

This marks the first time ever in Nigeria's football history that all three national teams, Super Falcons, Super Eagles, and Flying Eagles, missed their respective World Cup qualifications.
