Algeria edge Morocco on penalties in WAFCON third-place play-off

For the first time in their CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations history, Algeria secured a podium finish after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time in Rabat. Having suffered a loss to Malawi in the semi-finals, Algeria concluded the tournament on a high note with a bronze medal. This marked the second encounter between the two North African teams, with Morocco claiming a narrow victory in the group stages.

Morocco took an early lead in the 17th minute, with Ibtissam Jraidi’s shot striking the crossbar. However, Morocco solidified their advantage nine minutes later when Kautar Azraf showcased her technique, netting a well-placed left-footed shot into the far corner. Despite another close call from Jraidi, Algeria returned from halftime stronger, pressuring Morocco and creating multiple scoring opportunities.

In the 77th minute, a well-executed pass found captain Marine Dafeur, who narrowly missed the target. Lina Boussaha came close with a well-struck volley that sailed over the crossbar. Algeria clinched the victory in the 83rd minute when Melissa Bethi delivered a precise through ball to Boussaha, who calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper for a 1-1 draw.

Despite Morocco's efforts, Algeria prevailed in the penalty shootout, with Ines Belloumou converting the decisive penalty to secure a memorable bronze medal finish for Algeria at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026.
