After CAG flags E. Coli in drinking water, Railways announces major upgrade at 20,000 locations

Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report reveals E. coli contamination in drinking water at 49 Indian railway stations, prompting the Ministry of Railways to announce significant upgrades across 20,000 locations. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw chaired a high-level meeting at Rail Bhavan to review drinking water quality and direct immediate action to ensure safe water for passengers.

The new Tank to Tap filtration and monitoring system will be installed at 20,000 locations, including water coolers, replacing old tanks and introducing regular testing at source and outlet points. Centralized monitoring to track water quality and hold officials accountable will also be introduced, with water storage tanks cleaned and maintained regularly. The Railway Board will oversee implementation, with periodic transparency reports on water quality.
