19-yr-old held after Virginia University shooting wounds 5; hid in dorm closet

On Saturday night, a 19-year-old man named Camron Harris was arrested and charged with shooting five individuals at Virginia State University, according to police. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 23, with one of them, a 21-year-old man, suffering critical injuries. Harris was found hiding in a dormitory closet, though he is not a student at the university.

Four of the five injured individuals were also non-students. The university, a historically Black institution, has around 5,700 students and was the first fully state-supported four-year college for Black Americans. A campus lockdown was implemented in response to the shooting, which was subsequently lifted. Harris is facing eight felony warrants, including allegations of malicious wounding and firearm use during a felony.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown. Police are continuing to search for any additional suspects involved in the incident.
