‘You can’t do that’: David Warner slams Steve Smith over bizarre review against Bangladesh

Former Australia batsman David Warner expressed dissatisfaction with Steve Smith's review during the first Test against Bangladesh on Saturday. Warner had no issue with Smith challenging the umpire's decision, but was puzzled by the Australian's decision to signal for a review before umpire Kumar Dharmasena raised his finger. The incident occurred in the 14th over when Australia were 40/2.

Ebadot Hossain delivered an outside off-stump delivery, which Smith attempted to drive forcefully. A sound was produced as the ball passed the bat, leading to an appeal from Hossain and wicketkeeper Litton Das. Warner criticized Smith's quick review as he began raising his finger. "I just don’t like the way that Steve’s reacted there," said Warner on air.

"You can’t do that." When commentator Brendon Julian mentioned Smith's certainty that he was not dismissed and his rapid review, Warner reiterated, "I just don’t think you can do that!" Former Australia spinner Kerry O’Keeffe described the incident as highly unusual, stating that it was a unique moment in Test cricket for a batter to appeal before the umpire made a decision.

The review eventually confirmed Smith's intuition, as replays and ECHO edge technology revealed the sound originated from his bat hitting the ground, not an edge. Smith was later involved in another peculiar situation when Hossain believed he had caught Smith behind, but the umpire did not give him out. Bangladesh reviewed the decision, but technology confirmed no edge.

Smith later admitted to believing he made contact and that he was fortunate to survive. Smith eventually departed for 44 off 88 balls, caught by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Australia concluded the day trailing Bangladesh by 67 runs with four wickets in hand.
