Why Israel has done so little to rein in spiraling settler violence against Palestinians

The ongoing violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank has prompted a concerning lack of action from both the Israeli military and the United States. Palestinians in the village of Qusra have been forced to remain indoors due to the threat posed by these settlers, yet the Israeli military has failed to remove them from the area, located approximately an hour's drive from Tel Aviv.

Despite the immense military and intelligence capabilities demonstrated by Israel in recent years, the situation remains unresolved.

The United States, a significant contributor of military aid to Israel, has expressed disapproval of the situation, labeling the settlers as "terrorists." However, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz has downplayed the threat, referring to them as "radical misfits" or "boys on the hills." This perception is further reinforced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has embraced the settlers' cause, viewing them as a vital component in consolidating Israeli control over the West Bank and preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Netanyahu's government has been instrumental in the construction of over 150 settlements, housing more than 500,000 Jewish settlers, many of which are fully developed and resemble suburban areas.

While the Israeli military and Netanyahu's government have shown no signs of taking decisive action to curb this violence, the situation continues to escalate, threatening the prospects of a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
