What is Sapta Dhara? Decoding the key announcements in PM Modi’s Red Fort speech

On the 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a speech outlining several key announcements across various sectors. Among these, the concept of "Sapta Dhara" caught attention. This term refers to seven streams of development that Modi believes should be the focus of the government's policies over the next five to seven years. These streams include manufacturing, agriculture and food processing, technology and innovation, infrastructure, defence, the green and blue economy, and soft power.

In the realm of manufacturing, Modi emphasized the importance of cost, quality, and scale. For technology, he highlighted areas such as space, quantum, robotics, and 6G. Under infrastructure, he mentioned the development of high-speed rail, highways, inland waterways, and port-led development. In the defence sector, he stressed self-reliance, including drones, hypersonic technologies, and cybersecurity.

The green and blue economy was also highlighted, encompassing green manufacturing, fisheries, and coastal tourism. Lastly, soft power was identified as an essential component of the seven streams.

Turning to free online coaching for competitive exams, the government pledged to provide this service to students preparing for competitive examinations. However, details about which examinations will be covered, eligibility criteria, and the delivery method remain to be announced. This announcement comes amid a growing reliance on private coaching and a government survey that found 37% of Class 11 and 12 students took private coaching, with urban students spending significantly more on coaching than rural students.

Modi also announced that one crore youth would be trained in artificial intelligence skills over the next year. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to ensure that young people are not left behind in the rapidly evolving technological landscape. The government already runs AI-skilling programs across various educational institutions, with the IndiaAI Mission's IndiaAI FutureSkills program providing courses, fellowships, and Data and AI Labs in smaller cities.
