US pulls last aircraft carrier in Asia as Trump focuses on Iran, Western Hemisphere

The USS Abraham Lincoln is now expected to take its place in the Middle East, extending its deployment beyond its original May return date to aid in Iran-related operations.

The absence of a U.S. carrier in the Pacific may be temporary, but it highlights the toll such open-ended operations with Iran are taking on American sailors, according to analysts. President Trump has shifted focus away from the Asia-Pacific region, prioritizing the Western Hemisphere instead. This shift has left American allies in the Pacific feeling uneasy about the unpredictable Republican administration while China views it as a strategic advantage, capitalizing on the U.S. distraction and regional instability.

Beijing sees the U.S. military presence as a threat to its rise and an obstacle to its ambition to seize Taiwan, an island it claims as its own. However, the United States argues that the Pacific region is too economically vital to abandon. Despite China conducting naval exercises with Indonesia and showing aggression towards Japan and the Philippines, it is unlikely to invade Taiwan due to the presence of an American aircraft carrier.

The U.S. has long relied on aircraft carriers for military operations, with the USS Gerald R. Ford recently returning home after an 11-month deployment supporting operations against Iran and the capture of Venezuela's then-leader. The Lincoln has spent an unprecedented 240 days at sea. Analysts warn that prolonged deployment can lead to psychological exhaustion and health issues among crew members.
