Unity over freedom

Indonesia, marking its 81st year of independence, finds itself at a crossroads where the allure of centralized governance threatens to disrupt the progress of its democracy and regional unity. Despite comprising hundreds of ethnic groups and languages, the nation has managed to remain a united entity for seven decades, with the vast majority of its 280 million citizens referring to themselves as Indonesian.

This shared identity was largely shaped by anti-colonial sentiments, particularly against Dutch colonial rule, which served as the driving force behind the establishment of the modern Indonesian state.

The Indonesian language, derived from a minority language in Sumatra, has also played a crucial role in uniting the diverse archipelago. This lingua franca facilitated communication among the people of the Nusantara islands. While some argue that the Indonesian Military (TNI) is not a primary factor in maintaining the nation's cohesion, it has indeed been instrumental in the nation-building process.

As the country's first modern institution, the military spearheaded the armed struggle for independence and subsequently contributed to safeguarding the country's territorial integrity in the years following the Dutch colonial government's departure.

The military's top-down command structure consistently favored a centralized form of governance, prioritizing the concept of a unitary republic over the diverse and competing ideas and institutions that characterize Indonesia's rich cultural tapestry. As the nation celebrates its 81 years of independence, the tension between unity and freedom remains a pressing issue, reflecting the delicate balance between preserving a shared identity and respecting regional autonomy.
