Ukraine attacks Russia’s Samara industrial site as Kyiv ramps up long-range strikes

On Saturday, Ukraine conducted a large-scale attack on Russia's industrial site in Samara, a region in southwestern Russia, according to a Russian official. Ivan Noskov, the head of Samara's capital, reported that air defense forces had successfully repelled the "massive" missile attack, causing localized damage to the city's industrial facilities. Medical assistance was provided to the injured, but the extent of casualties was not specified.

In his social media post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the significance of the strike, stating that it aimed to inflict concrete damage on specific Russian facilities. The target, Progress Center, is a site operated by Russia's Roscosmos space agency and involved in the production of rocket technology and electronics. The strike was executed using Ukraine's domestically produced Flamingo missiles, launched from a distance of approximately 900 kilometers (560 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Zelenskyy also mentioned that Russia's Savasleyka air base, located about 700 kilometers (430 miles) from the front line, had been hit. He emphasized that peace must be felt in Russia through such targeted attacks. While most of Ukraine's strikes have a range of less than 200 kilometers (125 miles), long-range attacks have significantly increased this year, with Ukraine launching three times as many of those strikes in July compared to January, according to data from ACLED, an independent conflict monitor.
