U.S. upends Australia in 4x100m freestyle relay; Kate Douglass nearly breaks world record

In a remarkable upset at the Pan Pacific Championships, the United States women's team secured victory over Australia in the 4x100m freestyle relay for the first time in nine years. The U.S. women combined for a time of 3:29.32, which remains an American record and the third-fastest time in history. Kate Douglass led off the American relay, swimming a time of 51.69 seconds that also set a new American record, just one-hundredth of a second off the world record held by Dutch swimmer Marrit Steenbergen.

The last time the U.S. had beaten Australia in a women's 4x100m free event was at the 2017 World Championships. Australia had claimed the last four Olympic titles, as well as four of the last five world championships.
