Twin cities celebrate Independence Day with fervour

Independence Day festivities filled the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad on Saturday, as residents of all ages celebrated the 80th anniversary of India's freedom with patriotism. The tricolour fluttered atop government buildings, schools, and public venues, while residential areas and commercial districts displayed the national flag. Motorcycles, cars, and auto rickshaws carried national flags, often with multiple riders waving the tricolour. Colorful buntings draped key intersections, gleaming brightly at night.

At Idah Maidan, Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Commissioner Rudresh Ghali, along with councillors and civic officials, raised the flag following a Supreme Court directive. Dignitaries and political leaders paid tribute to Sangolli Rayanna, the revered freedom fighter and loyal aide of Kittur Rani Chennamma, laying flowers at his statue in Brindavan Circle.

District-level festivities took place at R.N. Shetty Stadium, while a taluk-level celebration occurred at Nehru Stadium. Hubballi Urban Tahsildar Mahesh Bhagavanth Gaste urged citizens to reaffirm their dedication to national development, social equality, environmental protection, and ethical values during the holiday.

Hubballi-Dharwad Central MLA Mahesh Tenginakai highlighted ongoing development projects and called for citizen participation in building a prosperous India by 2047. Officials recognized outstanding performance in the revised electoral rolls and meritorious students with awards. A parade featuring 21 contingents, including police, Home Guards, NCC, and Scouts and Guides, marched through the city, accompanied by cultural performances by students.

Former Legislative Council chairman Basavaraj Horatti, Pradeep Shettar, MLA, and senior officials attended the events. Educational institutions and residential associations organized various programs throughout the day, and evening cultural displays concluded the celebrations.
