Trump’s 2024 grocery photo op now haunts Republicans in the midterms

Two years after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump staged a press conference in New Jersey featuring grocery staples to criticize Democrats' handling of inflation, food prices continue to rise despite his promise to lower them. Standing between tables laden with groceries at his Bedminster golf club, Trump blamed the Biden administration for the sharp increases in prices, highlighting his central campaign promise of taming inflation and reducing the cost of living.

However, today higher gasoline and grocery prices are straining household budgets and have become the top issue for American voters. According to recent polling, Democrats now have a slight advantage over Republicans in terms of who voters perceive as better stewards of the economy for the first time in nearly a decade. Sheila Carney, a 68-year-old Trump voter, expressed her frustration, remarking that despite Trump's claims, he has failed to bring down food prices.

A Reuters analysis revealed that grocery prices have risen by 3.4% in the first 19 months of Trump's second term, although this rate is lower than during the initial months of former President Joe Biden's administration.
