Tropical Storm Lala expected to strengthen as it nears Hawaii

Tropical Storm Lala is headed directly towards Hawaii, with the Big Island set to be the first and most severely affected region. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm is currently located about 200 miles east-southeast of South Point, Hawaii and 405 miles southeast of Honolulu. As of 8 p.m. HST on Friday, Lala was spinning with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and was moving west-northwest at 13 mph.

Forecasts predict the storm's eye will pass near South Point on Saturday before making landfall south of the smaller islands on Sunday, potentially gaining hurricane status as it approaches. Hawaii County is under a Hurricane Warning, indicating that hurricane conditions are expected. Meanwhile, Maui County, along with Oahu and Kauai, are bracing for Tropical Storm Warning conditions.

The NHC anticipates hurricane-force winds on the Big Island on Saturday, with wind gusts up to 85 mph and peak wind speeds ranging from 55 to 70 mph. The island chain could see between four and twelve inches of rain, with the Big Island potentially experiencing up to 25 inches, mainly on the mountainous and windward slopes. This torrential downpour could lead to severe flooding, mudslides, and hazardous surf conditions.

Emergency shelters have been opened across the Big Island, and temporary evacuation points have been set up on Maui. Airlines have canceled several flights in anticipation of the storm, with Hawaii County officials urging residents to seek shelter and stock up on supplies.
