False ceiling falls at NIS Patiala during Independence Day celebrations

A portion of the false ceiling in the multipurpose hall-cum-wrestling hall at Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala collapsed during Independence Day celebrations. The incident occurred as the cultural performance was taking place on the stage. Several students and players, including those from the boxing and weightlifting teams, suffered minor injuries.

One student was performing on stage when the ceiling fell, causing panic among the attendees. The institute's director, Sumit Miglani, and the deputy director general, Vineet Kumar, are coordinating the response to the incident. A video captured the moment of the ceiling collapse. The institute's complex, established in 1961 and renamed in 1973, spans 268 acres and houses various sports facilities and accommodations for athletes. Measures are being taken to assess the structural safety of the building.
